At Soccer Buddies, our mission is to keep your little ones active, healthy, and happy! Given that school looks a little different this year (and more virtual), our team wanted to provide families with tips and tricks to help keep your littles active and learning at home. For the 15 months – 3-year-old age group specifically, we focus on improving coordination and cognitive thinking - all while having lots of fun! The most important thing for kids in this age group is to keep it simple. This At Home Tips Guide will feature an indoor activity and several outdoor activities, plus a healthy snack. Happy Reading!
INDOOR ACTIVITY – COLOR SORTING!
Color sorting is an activity that we do at Soccer Buddies that can easily be introduced in the home. It is an easy way to keep kiddos engaged while also helping kids develop important brain connections. All it takes is creating different color sections onto which kids sort out items with the matching color. You could use colored paper, paper plates, cups, or bowls to create color categories. Or you can print out a color chart like the one pictured below!
Now let us talk pieces! Things around the house like Legos or children’s small toys like trucks or game pieces are great items to sort. For a more interactive option, try having your kids help make different colored pieces out of paper, pom poms, empty toilet paper rolls, or popsicle sticks before sorting them into color categories. See our example below! 😊
Not only will this continue to help them learn their colors but it also builds both fine and gross motor skills through the act of picking up pom poms and reaching up to place it into the correct color roll.
At this age, you as the parent play an important role in your child’s life, especially when it comes to learning new skills. We encourage you to participate in this activity as well and help to reinforce their learning by saying the colors as they sort and correcting little mistakes they make along the way. Although this activity may seem simple, it will engage your child’s brain in so many ways including motor coordination, cognitive learning, and speech.
Thank you for reading! Make sure to check back soon for the next part in our series!
